The owners want to fix it by putting a pump under the house to pump the water out. This don't sound worth a to me because it implies they still expect water to go under there! WTF, should it be landscaped from the outside so no water will get under there in the first place!? Are sump pumps commonly used; are they good idea?

The trouble with …
The trouble with exterior vents is that in the winter, they bring in cold air to a cold damp space. It’s too easy for the humidity to hit 100% and condensation and mold happen. It’s better to bring house air into the crawlspace and then exhaust it from the crawlspace to the outside. The warm house temperature air keeps the crawlspace humidity at bay while exhausting the air allows for fresh air to come in and stale air to exit…….Look up Humidex crawlspace technology. You’ll see what I mean.
