Seventy-one students of the University of Delaware were forced to transfer to other housings because of a mold infestation in their rooms. Officials haven’t confirmed yet if the substance found is black mold.

Forty of 150 rooms were cleared and cleaned of mold. Officials said that their top priority is the health of their students. So when mold was discoverd, students were immediately relocated.

Seventy-one University of Delaware students were forced out of their rooms and put in temporary housing following the discovery of suspected black mold in a campus dormitory.

UD cleared 40 rooms in buildings A and B of the 150-room Ray Street Housing Complex late last week because of the mold infestation.

As of Tuesday, half of those rooms had been cleaned and cleared of all mold. Residents of the other 20 rooms remained in housing provided by UD while their rooms, as well as their heating and air-conditioning systems, are disinfected.

“The health and safety of the residents are the university’s top priorities,” Meredith Chapman, a UD spokeswoman, said in a statement.

This summer, the Jaques Dujarie residence hall faced a mold problem stemming from reduced humidity levels in affected rooms.

Mold was found on the fabric of some cushioned chairs throughout dorm rooms in Dujarie during early move-in for Resident Assistants and athletes. The mold was removed within two days of the initial finding.

Dave Rozeboom, director of Residence Life, said the removal of the accumulated water from the air conditioning condensate drain pan resulted in a reduction of the relative humidity in each affected room – from approximately 25-70 percent down to 45 percent. Rozeboom said this reduction in humidity was the source of the fungal growth.

The amount of mold found was not large enough to be harmful, but it still posed a problem for individuals with allergies to mold.

“In our environment, it is normal to have mold in varying concentrations, depending on the relative humidity, temperature gradient and et cetera,” Rozeboom said.

Students were informed of the situation by Residence Life staff.
